ESSENTIAL OIL SAFETY

Working with someone who has used essential oils before will help first-timers have a more beneficial and enjoyable experience. A large amount of information is readily available for those desiring to increase their knowledge of essential oil applications.

Aromatic

Our sense of smell influences many physiological pathways including the stimulation of hormones and other metabolic processes. Certain essential oils, when diffused in the air, can be very stimulating while others can be calming and soothing. For example i diffuse lavender before bedtime every night as it calms everyone down and sends us into a deep, blissful sleep. Beyond emotional benefits, diffusing essential oils can purify air of unwanted odors and some airborne pathogens. I use dōTERRA oil blends on guard and purify in my diffuser when someone’s not well to kill any  germs in the air. Low or no-heat essential oil diffusers are recommended as they do not change the chemical structure of the oil being diffused. Essential oils can also be used as cleansing and purifying additives to laundry and surface cleaners throughout the home.

Topical

Due to their natural molecular composition, essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically. Application of essential oils can have immediate, localised benefit to the target area of application. The chemical structure of essential oils also allows them to be absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin for internal benefit throughout the body. I apply most of our oils on the soles of our feet as they have the largest pores on the body and can absorb the fastest. It is almost always recommended to use a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil to dilute oils used on babies and children.

Internal

Essential oils can also be used as dietary supplements supporting a variety of healthy conditions. Some essential oils have powerful antioxidant properties while others help support healthy inflammatory response in cells. Lemon is a fantastic oil to include in your diet as it breaks down toxins and cleanses the body. You can also buy veggie caps to make your own dōTERRA capsules with different oils. Please be cautious as the oils are extremely potent and you will only need a very small amount when taking internally, always follow guidelines.

Safety guidelines when using essential oils :

1. Be sure to use only 100% pure therapeutic-grade essential oils and follow all label warnings and instructions.

2. If redness or irritation occurs when using essential oils topically, apply a vegetable oil such as fractionated coconut oil or olive oil to the affected area.

3. Essential oils should never be used in the eyes or inside the ear canal. In the event of accidental contact with the eye, dilute with vegetable oil or fractionated coconut oil NOT water.

4. Do NOT consume an essential oil internally unless labeled with a Supplement Facts box with specific dietary supplement use instructions and warnings.

5. Discontinue the use of an essential oil if you experience severe skin, stomach or respiratory irritation or discomfort.

6. I always dilute the oils on my kids. By applying a small, diluted amount of oil you can test for any sensitivity. Do not use oil on a child’s hand as they may transfer to their eyes or mouth.

7. Consult your physician before using essential oils if you are pregnant or under doctor’s care.

If you’re unsure about something – always ask!

This is a short list of commonly used essential oils that need caution when applied topically on skin and should always be diluted :

Cassia, Cinnamon, Tea Tree, Lemongrass, Thyme, On Guard, Clove, Wintergreen, Fennel, Melissa.

Please be aware that citrus oils when applied on the skin and then exposed to sunlight can cause the sun’s effect to be greatly magnified.
